Oceans of Opportunities... The Dawn Project Network’s 2024 Art and Poetry Competition Theme Unveiled

On the 29th of April, 2024, Landmark Beach in Lagos, Nigeria, was the epitome of fine ambiance, infused with a blend of hope and positive energy. Nature activists and caretakers of creation gathered once again by the sandy shores of the Atlantic Ocean to unveil the theme for the 2024 Dawn Project art and poetry competition.

Dr Pamela Ajayi

Addressing the audience, the initiator of the event, Dr. Pamela Ajayi, shared valuable insights into the newly revealed theme, “Oceans of Opportunities: Preserving Today for Tomorrow.” She brought attention to the critical state of dying coral reefs and their significance for the survival of humans and our planet. “We don’t see the corals, but they are there under the water, a multitude of them,” she said. Coral reefs, which provide a home for more than a third of all marine life, are suffering degradation, leading to habitat loss and the potential extinction of numerous species. She emphasized that the rising temperatures due to climate change are having a catastrophic effect on coral reefs.

In a similar spirit, Desmond Majekodunmi, Chairman of the Lekki Urban Forest and Animal Sanctuary Initiative (LUFASI), representing the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Akin Abayomi, underscored the urgency to protect our Earth and halt further harm to the only planet, among millions discovered, capable of supporting human life. He encouraged the youth to engage in this year’s competition with profound thought and creativity. Majekodunmi also praised Dr. Ajayi’s visionary efforts, as the platform offers young people a valuable stage to contribute to solutions for climate change.

He lauded the competition and called on young Nigerians to participate and advocate for sustainable living, which is vital for averting further disasters on Earth.

Lastly, another distinguished guest at the event, Mr. Paul Onwuanibe, MD of the Landmark Group, commended the Dawn Project Network for its steadfast commitment to fostering solutions to the environmental challenges faced by our planet.
