Building owners and property managers across Lagos face a looming crackdown as the state government has issued a March 31, 2026 deadline for the registration and safety certification of all elevators. Any building found operating unregistered or uncertified lifts after the deadline risks having the equipment shut down.
The warning was issued by the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos State Safety Commission, Lanre Mojola, who said the state will no longer tolerate unsafe or uncertified vertical transportation equipment in residential, commercial and public buildings.
According to Mojola, the move is part of efforts to prevent avoidable accidents as Lagos continues to experience rapid growth in high-rise developments. He emphasised that elevators are a critical component of modern urban infrastructure and must be properly maintained to protect lives.
He explained that under the Commission’s safety regulations, all elevators and other vertical transportation equipment must be officially registered and certified before they are put into operation and throughout their service life.
To facilitate compliance, the state government has launched a dedicated online registration platform — www.lasgsafetyreg.com — where building owners and facility managers can digitally register their elevators.
The platform ensures that newly installed elevators in both public and private buildings are inspected before they begin operation, while existing lifts are subjected to periodic safety audits to identify potential faults and prevent mechanical failures.
Mojola warned that the grace period is rapidly expiring, adding that any elevator found to be unregistered or lacking a valid safety certificate after March 31 will be decommissioned, while non-compliant buildings may also face sealing by enforcement authorities.
The Safety Commission also urged residents and office workers to support the initiative by reporting faulty elevators, missed maintenance schedules or unregistered lifts through its dedicated safety hotlines: 08033252687 and 08060918759.
The government said the enforcement drive is part of its broader commitment to strengthening safety standards across the state and ensuring that no property owner places cost above the safety of Lagos residents.
