Trailblazers and Change makers: Honoring Women’s Impact at ADAB’s International Women’s Day 2024

In an opulent celebration that painted Prince George’s County with the vibrant hues of diversity and achievement, the African Diaspora Advisory Board (ADAB) celebrated its 3rd Annual International Women’s Day 2024, with a radiant display of acknowledgement and recognition. This year's event, another testament to excellence, showcased the achievements of preeminent women from various fields while also praising the impact of women in the larger world.

It was a gathering that exudes unity and diversity, aligning well with this year’s theme, “Inspire Inclusion,” and it showcased the county’s commitment to fostering a culture of respect and trust while acknowledging  the diverse and unique experiences of its community members.

This year's event was a celebration of the stories of women of African descent who have made significant contributions to history with their enduring impact and achievements on the global scale. The spotlight shone on Brigadier Amanda I. Azubuike and Hon. Kanayo Awani, whose exceptional contributions have left a lasting legacy, as they were honoured with the ADAB 2024 GLOBAL WOMAN AWARD.

Presently serving as the Deputy Commanding General U.S. Army Cadet Command, Brigadier General Amanda I. Azubuike’s journey is one of historic firsts and exemplary service.

As the first African immigrant to reach the rank of Brigadier General in the U.S. military, her career trajectory has been nothing short of inspirational.

From her early days as a UH-1 pilot to her strategic roles at the Pentagon and beyond, her story is a testament to the heights that can be achieved through dedication and excellence.

While commending Brigadier Azubike's exceptional qualities, the Chairman of the African Diaspora Advisory Board, Dr. Vincent Iweanoge highlighted that there is nothing more powerful than a humble person with a warrior spirit driven by a higher purpose. "Gen. Azubuike has exemplified the warrior in her by excelling despite every barrier on her path and has become that beacon of hope and aspiration for the African female immigrant that seeks to achieve excellence. Thank you for your service", he concluded

In the same vein, Hon. Kanayo Awani Is the first African woman to attain the position of the Executive Vice President at AFREXIM Bank. She is remarkable fof her unwavering commitment to economic empowerment and trade development in the African continent. Her initiatives have not only spurred intra-African trade but have also uplifted women entrepreneurs, making her a pivotal figure in the continent’s economic narrative.

Since its establishment by County Executive Angela Alsobrooks in 2019, the African Diaspora Advisory Board, ADAB, has been a linchpin of community engagement, driving initiatives that have substantially improved the lives of African

diaspora residents in business, education, health, and cultural affairs.
