Two students from Moshood Abiola Polytechnic and Resign Regal Academy, Timothy Oluwabukola and Anthony Odemerho, have been accused of pulling off a daring heist, hacking into MTN Nigeria Communication's computers and making off with a staggering N1.9 billion worth of airtime and data.
The 2 suspects are said to be part of a SCAM syndicate with other members currently on the run as the arm of the law draw close.
The alleged cybercrime, which almost crippled business activities of the telecommunications giant, was brought to light in a Federal High Court in Lagos on Monday, 5th August as Justice Akintayo Aluko presided over the case, granting the defendants bail in the sum of N50 million each, with stringent conditions.
As the defendants navigate the complex bail conditions, they will be remanded in the Correctional Centre, their freedom hanging in the balance. The prosecution, meanwhile, has been tasked with verifying the authenticity of the documents submitted by the sureties.
This sensational case has raised questions about the vulnerability of Nigeria's telecommunications infrastructure and the growing threat of cybercrime in the country.
